Peer Education, Intern and Volunteers

Peer Education Program & Training

Would you like to meet new people? Be active on campus and in the community? Learn and teach others about health topics? Attend local, regional, and national conferences with students like you? Become a nationally recognized Certified Peer Educator? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then becoming a peer educator is for you! Joining the Student Health Advocates gives you a chance to experience all of these things! Email us at sha@lsu.edu for more information and meeting dates/times.

Students interested in becoming peer educators are also highly encouraged to take EDUC 2000, Section 3 - "Peer Education and Leadership." The main instructor is Hope McPhatter, however, other members of the Wellness Education Staff offer their support by guest teaching as well. Students who are majoring in the following subjects would find this course helpful although it is beneficial to everyone:

Health Education/Promotion
Mass Communications
Medicine or Nursing
Education
Journalism

Students who wish to become peer educators without taking the course should also fill out the Student Health Advocates Peer Education Application. This form helps us assess what a student has to offer the peer education program. Please return the form to the Wellness Education Department of the Student Health Center. Applications are also available in the Union. For more information, call 578-5718.

Internships

The Wellness Education Department has served as a placement site for interns in the fields of Social Work, Marketing, Nutrition/Dietetics and Business/Accounting. It would also be a good setting for students interested in Graphic Design. Decisions about the appropriateness of an internship in the Wellness Education Department will be made on a case-by-case basis, based on departmental need, available space, and internship requirements. Project-by-Project Volunteers & Community Service

The Wellness Education Department will accept the services of volunteers (including people referred by the courts or on-campus adjudication) on an as-needed basis. Call 225/578-5718 for details.
